[The Straits Times]The nightmare world of dreams

The issue of education is an ever-lasting debate. The questions that hang in the air like spirits never to be exorcised include the purpose of education, the ends of examinations, the association of good grades with success, and the trade-off between personal choice and parents' expectations. Dilemmas are everywhere. It is thus imperative to consider all these factors and resolve them within ourselves first. One thing which I believe Singapore is doing right is its efforts to de-stress the significance of exams, moving on instead to development of the person. However, there are still a lot of blank spaces waiting to be filled if we were to try and get everyone to be aware of their self-identities. Teachers, for one, need to develop their own "education philosophies" and not just move passively with top-down policies. In new-age Singapore, my dream is to see every educator knowing their purposes and doing things their own ways, gradually turning policy into a macro steering wheel powered by a bottom-up collective will.

For many Asian-Americans, their dreams of academic success have survived long journeys and refugee camps. Yet there are dark perils that run along the same path to achievement.
